The strict systematics of gallant etiquette dictate precise wardrobe changes. The day begins in the private négligé (banyan, contouche). For carriage rides, visits, and the promenade, society changes into the demi-toilette or habillée (habit and robe à l'anglaise). Appropriate functional clothing also existed for hunts or the ball, adapted to the requirements of the divertissement. The pinnacle is the parure or grand habit, reserved exclusively for formal court ceremonial.
